This Seasons Colour Q&A with Damien Rayner

Colourist Damien Rayner of Dario Cotroneo Salon shares his expert opinion on what’s hot in colour right now, who on the A-List has got it right and answers key colouring questions.

CELEBRITY STYLE

“Diane Kruger is my favourite blonde right now,” Damien reveals. “Her colour is a bit deeper at the roots and gets lighter on the ends. This combination gives her a natural soft tone and is perfect for winter.”

AS FOR THE HOTTEST RED HEAD IN TOWN?

“Julianne Moore,” he states emphatically. “She’s the most beautiful red head changing her tone throughout the year. It’s a great burnt toffee tone at the moment, a beautiful colour for winter.”

BRUNETTE

Katy Perry also warranted a mention in the brunette category. Damien says her colour manages to be contrasting without sacrificing beauty and appeal.

WHAT’S HOT IN COLOUR

“I’m loving the return of a huge colour palette this season, it’s a colourists dream.” Damien says of the variety of the current looks. “We’re seeing everything from strong 90’s solid colours to coppers, burnt fig and toffee tones which are hot right now, and the medium browns coming through are rich and nutty.  Darker shades are infused with reds of black currant, and cherry to aubergine.”

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR

One of Damien’s strengths is diagnosing the right colour for his clients’ face, a skill he says takes much experience to get the formula right for every individual.

“Many things come into diagnosing what’s going to be right for a client,” he says. “Most important are eye colour and skin tones. By choosing the right hair colour, you can really make a person’s eyes become a feature, as well as balance out the skin tone. This is especially important as the season changes.”

CAN COLOUR HELP THICKEN HAIR?

Damien says that although colouring can help hair appear thicker, it’s important to remember that other factors also come into play.

“In short, yes colouring your hair will thicken it up,” Damien says. “By adding colour and especially lightening the hair, the hair shaft swells, in turn making the hair thicker in diameter and giving it more body. But colouring the hair won’t give you more hair! As colourists there are many ways we can give hair the appearance of fullness and the illusion of thicker locks. But just as important is a good cut and a good stylist. I recommend Sonia Cotroneo who can direct you in how to style hair to look thicker, and which products to use to compliment the colour and overall look”

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
FOILS AND BALAYAGE?

“With Balayage, there are no foils used,” Damien explains. “This in turn creates a softer colour at the root area. Balayage still gives a highlighted effect, but it’s diffused and softer. SJP, Giselle and Miranda Kerr are great examples of this. Foiling and highlights are more precise, giving an even colour from roots to tips.”

Get The Looks With MYCURL

Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz – simple S-shaped curls

Dario says: “What a nod to old-school Hollywood glamour! Kate and Cameron prove their red-carpet credentials yet again with gorgeous soft curls and show-stopping metallic dresses.”

1. Part your hair to the left from hairline to crown, then section off the back of your hair from crown to behind both ears to give three even sections.

2. Back section: split the section in two vertically. Spray KMS Hot Spiral Spray onto one of these sections and roll hair around a vertical MYCURL, directing the hair away from your face. Secure the first strap around the mid lengths then continue rolling the MYCURL to just above the level of your cheekbone before securing the second strap.

3. Repeat with the other back section and left and right sides of hair.

4. On the left side, divide the hair into two vertical sections and repeat the steps above, directing hair away from the face and securing the 2nd strap below the cheekbone area. Repeat on the right side.

5. Clamp your straightening irons over each MYCURL for five seconds then allow hair to cool for 15 minutes.

6. While hair is cooling, use a tail comb to lift the crown area up and spray with hairspray, to create more volume while setting.

7. After hair has cooled, remove all MYCURLs and run your fingers through your hair.

Anna Kendrick & Demi Moore – up do's

Dario says: “Both Anna and Demi have opted for tousled curled upstyles, which softens their looks to suit their ruched gowns. Although tousled, neither has a hair out of place!”

1. Firstly part your hair down the centre (or your preferred parting) to the back hairline. Split each of these sections in two by dividing from the crown to behind your ear. This will create four even sections.

2. Start on the left side, spray KMS Bounce Back Spray onto the section of hair and roll in a MYCURL towards your face. Secure the first strap around the mid lengths and continue rolling the MYCURL to just above your check bone before securing the second strap. Clamp your straightening irons directly over each MYCURL for 5 seconds.

3. Repeat Step 2 on the opposite side, rolling towards your face, as well as the back two sections. Allow hair to cool for 15 minutes.

4. After hair has cooled, remove all MYCURLs, lightly brush through the hair and clip front sections forward.

5. Wrap the hair in the back section loosely and secure using bobbie pins, pinning flat to the head. Then take both sides from the front and bring them back over this section. Tie hair into a loose knot and secure ends by tucking them underneath.

6. Once finished, rub fingers gently through style to loosen the look a little.

Natalie Marks – side-swept curls

Dario says: “Natalie’s glossy chestnut curls are a perfect finishing touch to her sparkling gown. I love that she has left her neck bare to let her hair take centre stage – a commendable debut on the Oscars red carpet.”

1. Place hair into a middle parting and pull hair back into a loose ponytail ensuring the fringe is natural.

2. With the remaining hair in the ponytail spray KMS Hot Spiral spray onto the ponytail and roll one MYCURL in, rolling up away from the head (not under), secure and clamp your straightening irons directly over the MYCURL for 10seconds. Allow hair to cool for five minutes.

3. After hair has cooled, remove MYCURL and brush hair lightly. Apply a gloss spray to the ends to separate and add shine, then bring hair forward over the shoulder.

4. Sweep straightening irons through the fringe for a super-smooth finish.
